With the first construction access in place, site preparation work is starting at Waterbeach Barracks. Master developer, Urban&Civic, will be working with its contractors throughout the development to help them recruit local people and give people education and training opportunities to access the thousands of construction jobs that will be coming forward over the 15 year build.
The first contractor on site is Tom Blackwell Ltd, who will be carrying out the first phase of earthworks. This will include heightening the bund that runs along the side of the A10 – enhancing the future ecology corridor and enabling a safe walking, cycling and equestrian route – and creating a sustainable water drainage system, with ponds and swales that will take 19,000m³ of water and connect existing water systems to the lake.
The earthworks will then enable the next stage of work, which will see delivery of early infrastructure including the main construction access at the Cambridge Research Park Roundabout, 40km of cycleways and footpaths, 6km of roads, 5km of utilities and over 3,000m of drainage pipes and structures.
The Essex-based company is looking for people to fill the following full-time roles:
Construction Site Receptionist & Document Controller: responsible for the management and security of site-related documents, answering phone calls and forwarding enquiries to the relevant contact.
Site Office & Warehouse Facilities Cleaner: to keep the site clean and tidy.
Traffic Marshall: to maintain security surveillance, visitor logbooks, record deliveries, preserve pedestrian and traffic routes, and ensure safe movement of traffic in and around the site.
A valid CSCS card (or equivalent) is required and although experience would be welcome, training will be provided to successful candidates. Urban&Civic is also working with the Jobcentre and local college to support people interested in the roles to access free training, including courses to obtain the CSCS card so you can work on a construction site.
Alongside those Construction roles, Urban&Civic also have vacancies within their own expanding Cambridgeshire team, which include:
Communities, Communications and Partnerships, covering Cambridgeshire: supporting the community engagement and projects the team are involved in, and managing the PR, media and social media work of the team.
Community Development, focussing on the Wintringham development at St Neots: supporting new residents to make themselves at home and deliver activities, events and support systems to enable the new community to thrive.
Digital Marketing Apprentice starting in January 2020: supporting the team to develop the role of digital and social media in bringing projects to life, focussing on the Waterbeach development along with other Cambridgeshire sites.
Torie Denny Morley, Skills Lead for Urban&Civic said: “Developing our sites in a way that maximises the benefits for local people and creates a lasting legacy for the area is very important. At a time when unemployment is rising, we want to ensure the investment going into transforming the Barracks creates real opportunities for local people. The construction industry is in desperate need of people and can offer jobs today and tomorrow but also careers for the future.”
